Knowing When to Be Discrete

Drug & Alcohol Testing, Alcohol testingEmployer discretion is an important and sometimes ignored facet of owning and managing a business. Employers tend to be concerned about how well their staff are doing and whether or not each individual is contributing wholeheartedly to the health of the organization and employees tend to be concerned about whether or not their efforts and extra work are being duly noticed and accounted for (and paid for) by members of management. When either party is denied reassurance in this area, it can affect the health of the company as a whole, not to mention how each member of the organization views their own job and work requirements. Most business owners understand and acknowledge the value of having employees who love what they do and are willing to go the extra mile for the good of their employers and the company as a whole.

When employers are not assured of the commitment and quality work ethic of their staff, they become increasingly harsh concerning the work to be done, laying down stricter guidelines, passing more rules, and becoming a bit more brutal regarding punishment for breaking of said rules. They seek to control the environment around them, which includes every employee who happens to be working in that environment. If they feel disrespected or as if they are not being listened to, they are more likely to become worse in these areas.

Employees who do not receive the assurance that their hard work and overtime is being noticed, appreciated and duly compensated tend to become more focused on the bottom line (their income per task or per hour), rather than focusing on the quality and performance of the work which they are doing. They tend to become increasingly stressed, and another pattern is that they often grow to hate their jobs more and more. This hatred usually begins as a non-personal hatred of the sheer amount of work ahead of them, and eventually grows to target anything and anyone who contributes to their workload, including employers and senior staff. Thus, it is always a good idea to use discretion, have your employees tested often for drugs or alcohol, and to make sure that both managers and employees receive their due diligence.
