How Often Does Drug Abuse Enter the Workplace?

Workplace Drug Testing Laws, Drug Test PerthWhen planning your security measures and asset protection for your business, you will need some idea of how often drug abuse actually occurs in your workplace. Now, with each company, it will be different, but there are some factors which can be considered when it comes to figuring this out. For example, both the number of hours of work and the process of initial screening are factors in determining how well an employee is likely to follow the rules and whether or not they are likely to resort to drug abuse or alcoholism on or near the workplace.

In a study by Jerald Bachman and John Schulenberg, it was determined that high school students and young adults were likely to abuse drugs if they did not receive sufficient time away from work for exercise, eating breakfast, and leisure activities. The study positively correlated their positive work behavior with the sufficiency of healthy behaviors which provided their bodies enough sleep, enough nutrition, and enough recreation on regular, even daily, basis. This is something which often occurs even less in the lives of adults above the age of 25, since they have developed the self discipline to ignore bodily needs and psycho-social recreational needs in favor of their work and job responsibilities. When high school students and young adults are denied these basic needs due to work and academic time, they are more active in finding a way to, albeit unnaturally, fill the voids in their lives. For this reason, workplace drug testing in businesses or environments which heavily recruit young people is recommended. In addition to this, businesses which do not provide sufficient time away from work for long periods of time may wish to implement employee drug and alcohol testing in order to anticipate employees of any age who are seeking an outlet.
