Understand Why Drug Abuse is Not the Only Form of Addiction

Onsite Drug And Alcohol Screening, Workplace Drug Testing LawsAddiction, which is a dependence on a substance or behavior which is self destructive and non-productive, comes in many different forms. The two most famous types of addiction are drug abuse and alcoholism. However, addiction can manifest itself in dependency on food, on sex, on externally based love or validation, on pain, on endorphins, on exercise, on danger, and on physical violence. There are sub-categories of all of the various forms of addiction, but these are some of the main ones.

Addiction typically becomes a problem when a basic human need is not being met, and so the individual seeks to numb this pain by using endorphins, pain, mind-altering substances, or some type of cover-up in order to not deal with the original problem.

The interesting thing about abuse is that the problem itself is much easier dealt with than dealing with cleaning up the abusive behavior after it becomes a problem, too. It is much easier to face your divorce head on, rather than become a recovering alcoholic over a period of eight years. It is much simpler to recognize that you may need to grow inside before you become involved with members of the opposite sex, rather than choosing to engage in abusive behavior which will chip away at your self esteem even further.

In simplistic terms, abuse is putting off until tomorrow what you can do today. It is a secretive form of cowardice. It is betting against yourself. It is losing.

Addiction itself takes on many forms, as demonstrated above, but any of those forms result from a need to hide from an issue which the individual in question does not believe themselves capable of handling. This belief is what leads to the internal destruction and the abusive behavior and the further destruction of the individual.
