How Much Human Interaction Do We Really Need?

Alcohol Drug Testing, Drug Alcohol TestingFor centuries, humans have found comfort and solace through building and maintaining relationships with each and maintaining community relationships and neighborly behavior. However, some of us prefer solitude to constant interaction with others, and this in turn begs the question, “How much human interaction do we really need?” Is it just a social politeness or is it an actual human need which must be fulfilled in order for humans to live in balance with each other? In fact, one might even question whether total solitude is necessary for personal development and internal strength.

Solitude and interaction with others are both necessary, according to research. It is unsafe to continuously deprive humans of one or the other for any lengthy period of time, since both tend to be quite vital to individual growth. However, if one of them is to be chosen, solitude does seem to be the more dependable and stabile of the two attributes. Interestingly enough, constant social interaction, while filling for socialites and personable individuals, can somewhat drain one’s identity if they do not have accompanying solitude to refuel their internal strength and abilities. Unbroken solitude, however, wreaks less havoc upon the individual since it still acts as a strengthening agent and seems to be required by both extroverts and introverts.

So why do so many alcoholics and drug abusers have such a problem with social interaction, and are considered at their most dangerous if they continue in their solitude and lonely state? Well, this is mainly because social interaction cannot be predicted or controlled by many addicts and so therefore is considered by them to be undesirable. When they retreat into their own solitude with their drug of choice, their addiction may become even more pronounced than it was in the past.
