The Story of Your Business

If you have some employees who are particularly ambitious, you may find it helpful to guide them into the strength of their choice by telling them The Story of Your Businessthe story of your business. However, to focus yourself and all of your other employees, it is essential that you have this story clear, and it may be helpful to write it down. What all should you include?

First of all, begin with the founders of the company, their personal history, and why they began the company in the first place. If the founders are still alive, then it would be extremely powerful to have their firsthand account of what things where like back then, the difficulties they faced in specific areas, and what they thought about growing their company.

Next, you will want to talk about the challenges and opportunities the company faced in the economic climate at the time, and how the beginning company grew past the initial breaking point (the five year stage, approximately) and became successful over the long run.

Thirdly, you will want to talk about how, in your mind, working for this business has helped you grow as a person. Again, use details and specific instances, be very personal (even uncomfortably so) so that your example and help other employees who are struggling with their own issues with working in this company. It helps people to know that they do not have to be perfect all the time. It really….really…helps people to know that they can struggle and make mistakes and still come out on top in the end.

In our society of perfection, it is hard for people to make mistakes and to actually forgive themselves for not being perfect. Your personal history will teach and inspire others. When you are done with your business story, post it online, have employees read the history, and ask them if there is any branch of the company that they feel like they would like to strive for in the future. Having future goals is the best way to motivate your workers.

In conclusion, make sure that your business plan (not story) has employee onsite drug and alcohol screening. Without workplace drug testing, your employees would not be able to feel comfortable in making mistakes, nor would they feel as if their jobs were very safe, because substance abuse of any kind breeds an atmosphere of fear and distrust.
