Mediscreen offers its readers the latest information on strategies to aid in the monitoring and prevention of drug and alcohol use in the workplace. Sound drug and alcohol policies and procedures can help to ensure OHS compliance and defence against litigation, as well as provide business and industry with a health and safety framework that benefits all. Early detection and prevention of drug and alcohol use in the workplace are two such strategies that complement OHS and Fitness for Duty procedures. Here, we will focus on detection as a key component of a successful approach.
Signs of Drug Abuse in the Workplace
There are a number of indicators that may help to alert you to the presence or use of drugs in the workplace. These can range from physical detection signs and symptoms, through to behavioural and emotional issues, through to paraphernalia or drug equipment indicators in the workplace. Here is a list of signs to watch out for:
- Neglecting work or work-related responsibilities
- Rapid weight loss
- Unkempt – lack of grooming
- Lateness, leaving early
- Conflict with other employees
- Isolated
- Looking tired, red eyes
- Too alert and too “perky”
- Pupils that are far smaller or far larger than usual
- Changes in appetite
- Unusual body odour or breath
- Unusual smell on clothing
- Tremors
- Slurred speech, slow speech
- Reduced coordination
- Drop in performance
- Borrowing money
- Missing money or possessions in workplace
- Secretive behaviour
- Sudden change in friends, hangouts
- Syringes, joint ends, marijuana smoking paraphernalia “stashed” somewhere in the workplace[1]
Denial
Often, drug users will try to conceal some or all of these behaviours, and will also attempt to minimise or “deny” their drug usage or problem. This downplaying behaviour is a documented symptom of acute drug addiction, and it is important employers are aware of this strategy in employees who may appear to have a drug problem. In short, according to the Helpguide Organisation, the “urge to use may be so strong that the drug user’s mind finds many ways to rationalize away the addictive or drug using behaviour.”[2] Denial is an unconscious mechanism of defence. Minimising and rationalizing the drug use at work may be easier for the user, than facing up to the fact their drug usage is impacting work life and work relationships as well as work output and attendance.
Is it Your Concern?
Yes!
Even in industries and businesses where drug screening is not a legal requirement, it is YOUR concern. Drug misuse can be a serious problem not only for the misuse but also for the business where they work. Additionally, possession of some drugs is illegal. You could be breaking the law if you or other employees or employers knowingly allow drug-related activities in your workplace and you fail to act.
Drug screening such as that offered by Mediscreen can help to monitor and prevent drug use in the workplace. Comprehensive and cost-effective drug test solutions can help to increase health and safety and fitness for work, and can help the employer rest easy in the knowledge that the workplace is performing to optimum.
