Defensive and Offensive Behavior

Drug Testing Equipment, Drug ScreeningMany alcoholics and drug addicts exhibit behavior which corresponds with or is directly related to bi-polar disorder. This is typically depicted, especially at the peak of addictive satisfaction and the lows of withdrawal, through the mediums of defensive and offensive behavior.

Defensive behavior is the offspring of paranoia and lack of perspective. This is to be expected in any type of drug addiction or alcohol addiction, because both of these diseases reveal very strong side effects of altered and skewed perspectives on reality and relationships with other people. In many cases, defensive behavior is considered to be a normal reaction in the mind of the addict, and they are unable to see how their behavior is paranoid or unreasonable or even irrational. Fortunately, many people who are experienced with dealing with addicts are able to see this and find ways of coping with these individuals, usually by agree with them and then offering a slightly altered perspective as their own point of view, thus gradually (and unobtrusively) leading the addict into seeing the clarity of reality a little better.

Offensive behavior is typically adopted by the drug addict or the alcoholic as reasonable and virtuous reactions to what is perceived as disrespectful or aggressive behavior in others. Offensive behavior is also used as a tool by the addict to cover up whatever behavior of their own which they are feeling guilty about at the moment. The addict then typically turns on their victim of choice and begins accusing them of something, and this can be anything from actual thins they have done to fantasies which the addict has created in their own mind. Whatever the reason for the offensive behavior, it usually builds up from verbal threats to verbal accusations, gradually leading to yelling and verbal setting of physical and property boundaries, and then almost inevitably leading into physical defense of those boundaries through the use of vandalism, property destruction and physical abuse, even in some cases leading to killing someone.

The workplace or jobsite is no place for either defensive or offensive behavior, because they are typically manifestations of unreasonable aggression. Employee drug testing is the solution for identifying these employees and future employees who may indulge in drug abuse or alcoholism. Call Mediscreen today: (+61) 1300 79 70 40.
